Bardolino Wine Festival

A toast to tradition: the Grape and Wine Festival in Bardolino

As summer fades into autumn, Bardolino bursts into life with one of its most beloved annual events: the Grape and Wine Festival. This lively celebration blends tradition, food and wine culture, and festive spirit, drawing thousands of visitors from across Italy and beyond.

What is the Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival?

First held in 1920, the Grape and Wine Festival is a historic event created to mark the end of the grape harvest on Lake Garda and to honour one of the area's finest products: Bardolino DOC wine. Amid clinking glasses, rich aromas, and joyful music, the festival captures the true essence of the lake and its winemaking heritage.

Throughout the festival, the lakeside promenade comes alive with food and wine stalls hosted by local winemakers from Bardolino, Garda, Lazise, and nearby villages. Visitors can sample the finest local wines and hear the stories behind each bottle – tales of dedication, tradition, and a deep-rooted love for the land. And it doesn’t stop at wine. A rich array of regional dishes awaits: creamy risottos, flavourful cured meats, artisan cheeses, hearty polenta, freshly caught lake fish, and handcrafted desserts – all carefully prepared to celebrate the area’s authentic culinary heritage.

But the festival is more than just food and wine. It’s also a celebration of culture and community. Each year’s programme includes live music, art exhibitions, craft displays, children’s workshops, street performances, and the grand finale: a spectacular firework display over the lake that brings the festivities to a dazzling close.

Bardolino DOC red wine: the heart of the festival

Bardolino wine is one of the true stars of both the Lake Garda region and the festival itself. Officially recognized as a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata – Italy’s equivalent of the Protected Designation of Origin) since 1968, it’s made primarily from Corvina Veronese grapes, blended with Rondinella and Molinara. With its light ruby-red hue and dry, soft, harmonious flavour, Bardolino is an easy-drinking red wine that pairs effortlessly with the local cuisine. Light and refreshing, it’s not overly structured – ideal for those who appreciate a well-balanced glass that enhances a meal without overwhelming it.

Alongside the classic red wine, there’s also Chiaretto, Bardolino’s celebrated rosé version. Produced through a brief skin maceration, it takes on a delicate pink colour and offers a fresh, fruity, and slightly aromatic profile. Loved for its elegance and drinkability, Chiaretto has become one of Italy’s most distinctive rosés – perfect with lighter fare or simply enjoyed as a refreshing aperitif.

Bardolino’s appeal extends far beyond the region. In fact, over 70% of its production is exported, a testament to its growing international acclaim and enduring popularity on the global stage.

When is the next Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival?

The next edition of the Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival will take place from 2 to 6 October 2025. Attending the festival is a chance to experience Bardolino at its most vibrant – where conviviality, local flavours, and lakeside toasts come together in perfect harmony.

It’s an event that brings generations together and invites you to slow down, explore, and savour the moment. Preferably with a glass of Bardolino in hand, and the beauty of Lake Garda all around you.
