The Valle dei Mulini: a paradise for nature lovers

Unveiling the Valley of Mills, a hidden gem in the hinterland of Lake Garda

Looking for a scenic hike in Lake Garda to escape chaos?

Then the Valle dei Mulini (in dialect Valle dei Molini, i.e. Valley of Mills) is the perfect choice! This natural oasis of peace could not boast a nicer setting: surrounded by the hills of Costermano and Garda, just a stone's throw from the lake, it allows nature lovers and walkers to dive into the allure of the past while enjoying beautiful views along the path.

As you can probably imagine, the valley is named after the medieval water mills it once housed. These mills, which used to be powered by the Tesina stream rushing through the rocks, were the beating heart of the local economy, as they ground ancient grains for the neighbouring communities. Today, unfortunately, only a 17th-century mill is still to be seen, but the route offers some truly suggestive views.

The Valle dei Mulini hosts a rich biodiversity, with lush flora ranging from woodland to dainty wildflowers. The fauna is equally diverse, featuring several species of birds, amphibians, and small mammals. If you are lucky, you might even come across cuddly cats or graceful horses.

Depending on where you prefer to start, you can leave your car in Garda or Costermano (where, however, it is easier to find free parking).

The route can be walked as a loop trail, whereby various sections and paths can be combined as desired, including a fitness trail.

If you decide to start your hike in Costermano, just go to Via Carpene, near the German Military Cemetery, and start descending the valley. Then, take a left at the crossroads, proceed to Via Valtesina and keep walking until you reach Garda, covering a total distance of about 5 kilometres. The itinerary ends here but, if you wish to lengthen the route, just keep descending along the main road until you reach the lakefront, where you can enjoy a snack or a refreshing drink in one of the many bars or ice-cream parlours, and then head back.

A hike through the Valle dei Mulini is suitable for everyone, from children to the elderly. The route is well signposted and does not present any particular difficulties, except for a few short ascents and descents for which it is not recommended to bring a pushchair. If you decide to undertake the route by bike, a mountain bike is definitely the most appropriate choice. Along the route, several areas equipped with tables and benches invite you to relax and picnic.

The Valle dei Mulini is beautiful in every season, but the best time to visit is probably spring or autumn, when the colours of nature are at their brightest. However, even during the hot summer days it is worth a hike as you can enjoy the natural shade and the cool breeze of the valley.
