Shimmering waters, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant sunlight – Lake Garda is a living painting in itself, and has long inspired artists from across Europe. Among them were Goethe and, more than a century later, one of the great masters of Art Nouveau: Gustav Klimt. Far removed from his renowned gilded portraits and sensual figures, Klimt the landscape artist discovered a deep well of inspiration along Lake Garda’s serene shores.
Born and raised in imperial Vienna, Klimt was drawn to a different kind of light – brighter, more enveloping, with the warm, timeless glow of the Mediterranean. It was this light that beckoned him southward, away from Austrian towns and lakes, and led him to embark on a thrilling, inspiration-filled journey through Italy, with Lake Garda as one of his most meaningful stops. In the summer of 1913, painting his way through the charming villages that dot the lake, Klimt captured the luminous spirit of Italy in two extraordinary works: Malcesine on Lake Garda and Church in Cassone.
Malcesine on Lake Garda, 1913
Characterised by sparkling waters that mirror vibrant skies, Klimt’s landscapes radiate with the luminous colours of Lake Garda. Through his paintings, he invites us to admire the rich hues of the region, from the crystal-clear blues of the lake to the lush greens of cypress and olive trees that dot the landscape. These natural elements blend seamlessly with the area’s distinctive architecture, such as the Scaliger Castle in Malcesine and the church of Cassone. What stands out is Klimt’s meticulous technique, combined with impressionistic brushstrokes – all rendered in his signature square format. These expressive choices reflect both his pursuit of harmony and the shifting states of mind that shaped his creative process.
Klimt does not simply depict the landscape – he interprets it, transforming reality into dreamlike visions that are emblematic of his style. His Lake Garda paintings reveal an intimate, contemplative dimension, marked by the complete absence of human figures. Instead, nature becomes a mirror of the soul. The Viennese artist is captivated by the surface of the water, by reflections and the unique ambiance the lake evokes – elements that he elevates and distills into his most poetic landscapes.
Church in Cassone, 1913
Klimt’s time on Lake Garda marked a pivotal moment in his artistic journey, offering him the freedom to experiment with new techniques and approach landscape painting with renewed freshness. Many of the iconic landscapes we admire today in museums around the world were born from these revitalising stays along the lake’s shores.
