Just 15 minutes from the shores of Lake Garda, nestled in the heart of the Lagarina Valley, lies Rivoli Veronese – a charming gem embraced by the Adige River with distant Monte Baldo rising on the horizon. Here, history and natural beauty blend effortlessly with human ingenuity, offering a landscape that surprises and inspires at every turn.
If you're reading this, chances are you're ready to join us on a scenic journey – one that winds through lush greenery and rises toward the sky with Rivoli’s striking white giants: the wind turbines.
Whether you're staying in the Valpolicella area, holidaying by Lake Garda, or exploring the Adige Valley, you’ve likely caught a glimpse of these towering beauties. They’re hard to miss! But have you ever stood just steps from one, felt the hum of the wind, and looked up in awe? If not, keep reading – Rivoli’s giants have a few stories to tell.
Ready, set, walk!
Our scenic walk begins in Rivoli Veronese, in the charming Piazza Busolli, where parking is usually easy and hassle-free. From here, the first stretch of asphalted road immediately rewards you with a stunning view of Fort Wohlgemuth – a majestic Austrian fortress standing tall for over 150 years, a silent stone sentinel bearing witness to bygone eras and battles.
Continue walking until you reach the junction with Strada della Rocca, then follow the path to your right. This is where the adventure begins: a more rugged trail with a mixed surface, marked by steady climbs and gentle descents. It might challenge your legs, but each step offers new scenery and fresh perspectives that make the effort more than worthwhile.
From this point on, the four wind turbines of Mount Mesa will gradually come into view, one after the other. Built and installed between 2012 and 2013, each one towers at around 125 metres tall. Standing beneath them, it’s hard not to feel small – watching these giants harness the power of the wind as they quietly preside over the valley. And while you're there, don't forget to take a moment to look around and soak in the panoramic views stretching out toward Monte Baldo and the winding Adige River.
The route continues past the turbines, leading you to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the Adige valley. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the landscape below – and a stunning look back at the turbines you’ve just passed.
But don’t lose your sense of direction! One curious feature of this route is the optical illusion it creates: you may feel as though you've crossed the Adige River and ended up on its eastern bank. As a matter of fact, you're simply circling a headland, still very much on the same side you started from.
For the return journey, the path reconnects with Strada della Rocca, becoming a gentler, fully paved route. It’s a beautiful way to end the walk – perfect for stretching your legs and taking in the scenery one last time.
Dress smart, walk easy
To make the most of this loop trail – with its varying terrain and occasional steep sections – it's important to dress appropriately. Start with a good pair of comfortable trekking shoes with solid grip. These are key for staying safe on uneven paths and during ascents and descents. While much of the route winds through woodland, shade can be limited, so we recommend bringing a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Don’t forget to carry plenty of water – it’s essential, especially during the warmer months. Lastly, be aware that some parts of the trail may have tall grass. For extra comfort and protection, long trousers are your best choice.
Last but not least, there are plenty of great picnic spots along the way – perfect for a snack break to recharge and soak in the views.
Let the wind lead the way
More than just a walk, this 6-kilometre route offers a rewarding and accessible experience for everyone – woven through history, sweeping landscapes, and just a touch of adventure. It takes around 90 minutes to complete and is often accompanied by a gentle breeze, a signature of this wonderfully windy corner of the valley.
And to wrap up your walk in the best possible way, treat yourself to a well-deserved, refreshing aperitif at one of the bars in the heart of Rivoli. It’s the perfect spot to take in the picturesque surroundings one last time, while savouring both the view and the satisfaction of your little adventure.
